Open Road Cake

To decorate your next cake with an authentic asphalt feel, regular chocolate frosting just won't do. Here's how you can pave a cake with the real look of asphalt. Decorated with toy cars or trucks, it's a favorite with little boys at birthday parties!

IngredientsOpen Road Cake
Your favorite layer cake recipe (we've listed ours below)
Vanilla buttercream frosting (recipe below)
buttercup yellow icing paste
black icing paste
leaf green icing paste
(Note: Paste food colors (for example, Wilton's) give you more vibrant colors than liquid food coloring and are usually available at party supply stores.)

Bake cake in a 13x9-inch pan. Let cool. Make buttercream frosting. Set aside 1/2 cup and divide the rest in two equal portions. Mix in black paste in one portion and green paste in the other. Add paste in small quantities to get your desired color. With a toothpick or knife, lightly mark where you want the road. Ice the road with the black icing, then ice the rest of the cake with the green frosting. Mix in yellow paste in the remaining 1/2 cup of frosting. Pipe yellow lines on road. Before serving, place clean toy cars and trucks on road. You can also add a sprig of greenery for a tree. Just wrap the bottom in wax paper before inserting into cake.

Silver White Cake

2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour or 2 1/2 cups cake flour
1 2/3 cups sugar
2/3 cup shortening
1 1/4 cups milk
3 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla or almond extract
5 large egg whites

Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease bottom and sides of 13x9x2-inch pan, with shortening; lightly flour. Beat all ingredients except egg whites in a large bowl with an electric mixer on low speed 30 seconds, scraping bowl constantly. Beat on high speed 2 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Beat in egg whites on high two minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Pour into pan. Bake 40 to 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean or until cake springs back when touched lightly in center. Cool pan on wire rack; remove from pan to wire rack. Cool completely before icing.
